Lewis R. Newby's Obituary
Lewis R. Newby 82 of Deltona passed away on January 26, 2024. He was born in Dixon, Missouri, raised in the center and suburbs of St. Louis. Lew made up his mind at the age of 12 to become a Naval Aviator. His parents, Bud and Anna Newby helped him achieve the grades and everything needed to get accepted into and appointed to the United States Naval Academy. After four years of hard work there, he achieved his other goal from his youth, to marry his high school sweetheart Sara. Lewis continued to excel as a Naval Officer and pilot, earning a master's degree in Aeronautical Engineering, command of an aviation squadron, and eventually the rank of Captain before retiring in 1989. Lewis went on to a second career as a nuclear safety expert and maintained a key roll in keeping the United States of America safe from domestic nuclear attack. After helping his mother and Sara's mother in their final years, Lew brought Sara to Deltona, Florida.
Lew was always humble and incredibly optimistic. He also managed to maintain a very realistic view of the world. He just didn't let things get him down. Always ready to help, Lewis could be found building, fixing, researching, and just about any other helpful verb you can name.
Taking care of the ones he loved was his top priority. He always had a word of encouragement for anybody who would listen to it. He loved to help others succeed. If he could speak to you right now, he would say, "Live you life the best you can. remember me fondly, but don't slow your movement forward. Love like I did, live for others, and keep your head high." Lewis is survived by his wife Sara, his children Lewis Newby Jr. and his wife Carol, Laura Nolette, and Heather Fernandez and her husband Chris, as well as seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
