I was in Mr. Rogers 8th grade class at PS 5 during the 73-74 school term. I also went into teaching and have often recalled Mr. Rogers as a teacher. I went to the same school k-8 which is unheard of today. My mom remarried near the end of my 8th grade year and I was going to have to change schools. Mr. Rogers kept it a secret so I could finish with all my friends and him of course. I am Irish/white. There were only three white kids in our class. I remember during the race riots Mr. Rogers walked us home so we would be safe. I also remember him making us dress up on Friday. I wish I had, had a chance to touch base with him before he passed. Great man.
