Mitchel and family
Judy and I were deeply saddened on January 3 to learn your mother had passed. Your mother was a very special friend since those days in the 1960s when we first had the pleasure of meeting and appreciating the exceptional team your parents demonstrated to us and others. That bond was solidified in 1968 when the 4 of us attended the AOU meeting in Alaska. We decided to go early to get a unique experience on the Kenai Penisula before the exceptional field trip to the Aleutians and the Pribilof Islands. It was such a delight to experience your mother's wonderful sense of humor as well as her keen eye for spotting things of interest. We got a deep taste of that after seeking moose for many hours on the Kenai Refuge to have your mother spot a group of moose beyond refuge boundaries. We had the special pleasure of attending many meetings together. I believe your mother could write a fascinating book about her observations of the behavior of famous ornithologists. She had us in stitches more than once!! As your father failed she was so thoughtful about alerting us to his condition and how best to carry on a good conversation. We were pleased we could call her and so enjoyed visiting with her after she was widowed and disappointed when technology and health compromised that communication. We were so fortunate to have these wonderfully rich experiences with your parents. The mark they left on this globe is so special and of such great value. When I initiated an effort to update your fathers academic genealogy it clearly shows how this team has left a most unusual legacy of conservation of the natural world.
