William Francis Conroy II's Obituary
William F. Conroy, 75, of Debary, Florida, died September 18, 2012, at Fish Hospital, Orange City, FL.
Mr. Conroy was born July 12, 1937 in Mount Vernon, New York, the son of the late William F. Conroy Sr. and Loretta C. Conroy. He was the younger of two siblings. On September 22, 1956, he married Jacqueline Ann Davis at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Brunswick, GA.
Mr. Conroy graduated from St. Anthony’s School in the Bronx, New York, NY; Wheatland High School, Wheatland, CA; and Seminole Community College, Sanford FL. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1955 and attended Jet Engine Test Cell School at Naval Technical Training School, Memphis, TN and served at Naval Air Station, Glenco, GA; Naval Air Station Jacksonville, FL; Naval Air Station Quonset Point, RI; and Naval Air Station Floyd Bennett Field, NY. While in the Navy Mr. Conroy also served onboard USS WASP (CVS-18) as an in-flight sonar operator assigned to Anti-Submarine Squadron THREE ONE (VS-31).
Mr. Conroy transitioned to the U.S. Air Force in 1966 and served as a jet engine, test cell operator/supervisor at Beale Air Force Base CA (two tours); Utapao, Thailand as a jet engine test cell operator/supervisor; Air Force Recruiter in Passaic, NJ; and Laughlin Air Force Base, TX as a jet-engine test cell and flight line superintendent. Mr. Conroy retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1977 after 22 years of military service. During his military service, Mr. Conroy completed Officer Training School/Non-Commissioned Officers Academy at Lackland A.F.B. San Antonio, TX, and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal and various service and campaign medals including the Republic of Vietnam Service Medal.
After retiring from the U.S. Military in 1977, Mr. Conroy was employed as a diesel engine and thermo-king refrigerator mechanic with Alterman Truck Lines and then subsequently with the City of Jacksonville FL. In 1979 Mr. Conroy was subsequently employed as a commercial operator, Dispatcher and Traffic Manager of Codisco Metal Manufacturing, Inc. Sanford, FL. Mr. Conroy’s last employer was Coastline Distributor as a Traffic Manager from 1993 to 1998.
Mr. Conroy was active in the community as an umpire for the Val Verde County Little League Association; Past President of the Fleet Reserve Association, Brooklyn, N.Y. He was a Fourth Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus in Brooklyn, NY and was a Past Grand Knight, San Felipe Council, Del Rio, TX. He was also a Life Member of the Air Force Sargent’s Association and the Disabled American Veterans Association; member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Order of The Moose Lodge, Four Townes Moose Family Center 655 and with the St John’s River 227 Moose Legion Council, Debary FL. While with the Order of the Moose at Four Townes Mr. Conroy served in various positions on the Board of Officers and participated in several fund raising activities, most notably as a Bingo Caller.
Mr. Conroy is survived by his wife Jacqueline; his sister Arlene Dorr of Henrietta, New York; two sister-in-laws, Jerry Carter of Woodbine, Georgia; and Regina Borders of Waverly, Georgia; one brother-in-law, Ronald Borders of Waverly, GA; four sons, William III of California, MD; Daniel of Kissimmee, FL; James of Deltona, FL; Patrick of DeBary, FL: seven grandchildren (Jacqueline Conroy, William F. Conroy IV, Amy Richardson, Casey Conroy, Patrick Conroy, Brandon Conroy and Jordyn Conroy; and three great-grandchildren, Kenneth and Jacob Warthen and Timothy Richardson).
Mr. Conroy was preceded in death by his daughter, Debra Ann Conroy, brother-in-law, Wayne Davis; and brother-in-law, George Carter.
A service will be held at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Debary, Florida.
