Shirley Irene Blix's Obituary
Shirley Irene Blix (nee Johnson) of Orange City, Florida, entered into the presence of her Lord on December 16, 2010. Shirley was born to the late Leif Sverre Johnson and late Ingeborg Kristina Johnson (nee Lithander) on July 15, 1926 in Brooklyn, New York. She also lived in Shirley, New York, the West Palm Beach area in Florida, Titusville, Florida, and in 2007 moved to Orange City, Florida.
She is survived by her husband of 50 years, John. Shirley was preceded in death by her sister Gretha Mielke. She is survived by her three sisters: Clara Williams of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, Carol Pisarra of Brooklyn, New York, and Jean Hammel of Windham, New York. She is also survived by three children: Mark Blix of Orange City, Florida, Eric Blix of San Pedro, California, and Christine Blix of Titusville, Florida and by three grandchildren: Simone Gaines in the Navy, and Katie and Charlie Blix of Orange City, Florida.
Shirley served as a WAC in the Army from 12/30/1949 to 2/11/1953, rising to the rank of Corporal. She was in West Germany among other places. After being discharged she had a number of jobs including working at Manufacturers Hanover. Upon marriage she became a homemaker, warmly remembered by her children for how she raised them with love.
Until moving out of Brooklyn in 1974 she served God faithfully at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, at one point being an assistant church secretary. In later life she became a Baptist - continuing to serve God lastly as a member of Grace Chapel in Sanford, Florida.
Two Memorial services will be held for Shirley: The first Memorial Service will be held 1:00 P.M. on January 8, 2011 at First Baptist Church, Markham Woods http://mwbaptist.com/#/directions/4535232131 for those in Florida to attend (officiated by her pastor Chris Hatton of Grace Chapel, Sanford). The second Memorial Service will be held 11:00 A.M. on April 9, 2011 at Meade Street Baptist Church, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania http://www.meadestreetbaptistchurch.com/ for her many relatives up North to attend (officiated by her brother-in-law Ken Williams, a retired pastor).
Her ashes will be inurned at Bushnell National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers those wishing to make a contribution are asked to make donations to Halifax Health Hospice http://hovf.org/donate/default.aspx. Her family was touched by the care she received in her final days at their Care Center in Orange City.
