Richard Masato Kataoka's Obituary
Richard M. Kataoka passed into his eternal rest on April 24, 2026 in Orange City, Florida at the age of 90. Richard was born in Fresno, California on May 31, 1935 from parents Alice and Fred Kataoka, both preceding him in death.
Richard lived a life shaped by movement, independence, and a deep devotion to art. As a young man, he served in the United States Army, an experience that marked an important chapter in his early life.
In the years that followed, he spent time living in Massachusetts and later in Newport, Rhode Island, before eventually relocating to Florida in the late 1990s. He made that move alongside his mother so they could be closer to his only daughter, Shana, a decision that reflected the importance of family in his life.
An only child, he is remembered as the last male of the Kataoka family line, a detail shared by a cousin that carries a quiet sense of legacy. Though his life took him to different places, one constant remained: his love and dedication to art. It was not just an interest, but the central passion of his life—something he pursued with focus and authenticity.
He will be remembered for his unique spirit, his artistic devotion, and the path he carved in his own way.
He is survived by his daughter, Shana Sjoberg and her husband. As well as extended family and friends that will miss him dearly
