Noutay Souvanthong's Obituary
Mr. Noutay Souvanthong, Age 69, of Deltona, Florida, passed away on April 7th of 2018, losing his battle to Cancer. He was born on March 2nd, 1949 at the young age of 69, 1 month and 5 days. He was born in Ban Nom Pua Muang Thai Khak Kang Kham Mourn.
Son of Mr. Tone and Bai Souvanthong. He was the only son of 5 children and is preceded by his sister Khampa Khampharasavath and parents. He studied at Bahn Tha Dor School, then went to trade school to learn wood-work/carpentry. He went to school in Bangkok Thailand in 1967 to 1969 in Oudone School, where he met his best friend Monh Souvanthong and was engaged to be married. They went their separate ways where Monh Souvanthong went to teach children at a local school and Mr. Noutay Souvanthong was a professor at a trade school in Luck 7, province Savannakhet sharing his skills as a carpenter. He returned to Thai Khak College in 1975 to teach students. He left a lifelong impression on his students and some he has reunited with here in America.
Noutay and Monh reunited and married in January 1970 and their journey began. They had 2 sons, 3 daughters, 5 grandsons and 6 granddaughters.
In 1981, Noutay received a letter at his school, which was accidently given to him. This letter was supposed to be delivered to another family. Noutay was scared that the communist authorities would think the letter was meant for him and either arrest him or kill him and his family. He went home that evening and told his wife, “We have to go”. They packed up just what they could carry. His friends and family helped with their escape in the middle of the night and Noutay with his family of 7, his Mother-in-law and brother in law all escaped in a small canoe to the refugee camp in Thailand. His actions is a great example of his bravery and his character as a protector.
In September of 1981, he landed in America with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Noutay was a proud/hard-working man and did not want his family to live off the government or in the projects. He quickly met the Picarello family who offered him his first job. He not only worked for them but became a part of their family because of his loving nature and hard work. He was able to save his earnings to purchase his first home where he raised his family and others creating countless memories for 28 years. For those that had the pleasure to know Noutay, will always say he is the most welcoming and friendly person they ever met. A very polite gentleman who would give his shirt off his back to give those in need. He lived a full life with his immediately family and extended family and friends, that was the most important to him. His family was his priority. He led the Laos Community for many years helping other refugees start their life in America. He would stop everything to help others. He used his expertise in wood work to help his family and the community, Building Temple structures in many cities and Shrines to help their organization. So many of his family’s homes will have his touch in their home from the work that he did for them.
His recent passion and hobby was golf. He loved the sport and would have played every day if he could. He was able to play golf with his children, grandchildren and many friends. Most of our fond memories of Noutay will either be with golf, fishing, hunting or just visiting him in his home in Lynn, Massachusetts. He loved to sing music, play the guitar, dancing at parties and just enjoying life. But the main thing that made him content was to see his family and friends happy and successful.
We truly lost a special soul that touched so many lives in a positive way. Our lives will never be the same but we can live on knowing that he taught us all so much and will always watch over us.
