Mavis A. Gayle's Obituary
Mavis Adina Gayle age 88, was born the third of ten children to Theresa and Egbert Corriders, in Red Lands, Clarendon Jamaica WI. She had been a lifelong Seventh Day Adventist. Mavis Corriders worked at the original Andrews Memorial Hospital located behind the North Street SDA church in Kingston Jamaica. She moved with the hospital to its current location at 27 Hope Road in St Andrews Jamaica. There at the hospital she met Simeon Gayle and love blossomed, not too long after they were married (she brought a son to the family Raymond). Mavis and Simeon later added 2 girls, Cynthia Gayle Barned and Mauver Gayle Skipper and 4 sons Franz, Trevor, Gregg and Melvin. This union also produced 14 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. She had many nieces and nephews and many friends who affectionately called her “May May”. She had two sons-in-law, Michael Barned and David Skipper(deceased); 4 daughters in laws, Jacqueline Gayle, Rose Gayle. Michelle and Andrea Gayle (deceased).
In 1965 Mrs. Gayle migrated to the USA, where she studied to be a Home Health Aide for new born babies and later with other ages. She lived in the Bronx NY and was a member of the Bronx Temple SDA church.
After retiring they moved to Deltona Florida where she met a new set of friends and joined the church choir.
“The Mother” as she is lovingly called by her children was a very comedic person. She always has a wise crack or a snip-it for everything. She was at the doctor’s office one day with her daughter Cynthia a nurse asked her, how many children do you have? She turned and asked the nurse, how many days are in a week? The nurse looked at her and Cynthia and thought she had lost her mind. Her daughter asked the nurse the same question and the nurse answered 7, that is the answer said her daughter to the nurse and by the way she is not losing her mind.
Mrs. Gayle baked many wedding cakes, because she liked baking. She also liked playing her organ because music was one of her favorite things next to sewing, gardening and walking in her neighborhood with her friends.
Mrs. Gayle was preceded by her husband by 22 years. She was now tired and needed the rest. She is survived by a sister Sybel Johnson from Margate, Florida, her 7 children, many cousins, nieces, nephews too many to count. Sweet sleep mother, sister, aunt, Grandma, Great grandma, Great Great grandma and friend. We shall see you on the Great Getting up Morning.
