Jay G Short's Obituary
Jay Short, 84, died Friday April 13 th 2018 at Fish Memorial Hospital in Orange City, Florida, after a prolonged illness. He leaves his wife of 55 years, Rebecca (Hope) Short; his son, Alan Short; his daughter Catherine Frank and her husband, Chad; and four grandchildren, Eric and Alicia Short, and Lauren and Jackson Frank. Born and raised in Syracuse, New York, the son of George and Elizabeth (Gillespie) Short, Jay served in the Army national guard from 1952-1959. In 1961,Jay graduated from Morningside College, Iowa with a bachelor of arts degree. He went on to get a masters degree in mathematics at the university of South Dakota. Jay started out his teaching career at Sodus high School. After marrying Rebecca, his college sweetheart, he taught at East High School in Sioux City Iowa. He eventually moved to Newark where he taught math at Newark High School from 1969 to 1991. Jay had a passion for sailing ever since he was a young boy growing up on Sodus Bay. The sailing team of Lee and Jay Short raced in and won many regattas during his summers on the bay. Jay was an instructor at Sodus bay junior Sailing Association from 1961-1963. He later became director for 5 years in the. mid 1970s. Jay also enjoyed sailing his on sail boats on Lake Ontario. Jay loved to volunteer for Meals on Wheels and was its treasurer for multiple years. He was very active at Park Presbyterian Church and sang in the choir for over 25 years. Jay was not only cherished for his compassionate character, but also for being an honest and loving husband, father, and grandfather. He will be missed.
