Edward Eugene Gray's Obituary
Edward Eugene Gray was born March 4, 1928 in Washington DC. His parents were Oscar Edward Gray and Florence Ella Lomax Gray. Edward departed this life on September 25, 2012 at the Hospice Care Center in Orange City, Florida after an extended length of illness.
Eddie, as he is affectionately called by his loved ones, was educated in the District of Columbia schools. He attended Morgan State College in Baltimore, MD and also Montgomery College in Gaithersburg, MD.
He entered the US Army in August, 1954 and was honorably discharged in August, 1956.
Eddie held various positions with District of Columbia including a housing specialist with HUD, administrative assistant with FDA and DC Woman's Bureau.
In 1987 he retired after 30 years of service and three years later Eddie and his wife Mildred Carroll Gray moved from Potomac, MD to Sanford, North Carolina. While in Sanford, he held a position on the Lee County Board of Health for one term. He also worked as a magistrate on a part-time basis for a short period of time. He received his Pilot's license while in Sanford.
Eddie is survived by his devoted wife and caregiver Mildred; one daughter Edwardina (DeDe, Millie), son-in-law David R. Smith, one granddaughter Kari Ella Smith (truly the love of his life) of Fairfax, VA; two sons from a previous marriage, Edward Jr. of Philadelphia, PA and Bernard of Alexandria, VA; a half sister Gaile Harrell of Jacksonville, FL; sister-in-law Jessie Bernadine Davis (Alexander Jr.) of Sanford, NC; four brothers-in-law Ulysses, Wayne, and Henry Carroll Jr. (Martha Elaine) of Enfield, NC and Rev. Harry A. Carroll of Raleigh, NC and a host of nieces and nephews and cousins.
