Delia Maria Baez's Obituary
Born, Maria Delia Rivera Alvarez in the beautiful island of Dorado Puerto Rico ,on May 20, 1934. She was the oldest daughter of Alejandro Rivera and Pastora Alvarez whom at the time of giving birth to her child passed away – Delia a.k.a. “Yeya” helped to raise her 12 brothers and sisters. She was a hard working woman, raising her 7 children in a disciplined way. It was from here that Delia learned much of her punctuality.
Married after leaving home at the age of 18, to Eugenio Baez birthing – Abner, Gamalier, Samuel, Maria, Irish, Nelida and Javier. They decided to journey to the big city of New York where she became a hairdresser for several years, from there on to several jobs to earn a living for her family. Years after she established her passion there was nothing more satisfying then to take care of the impoverished and sick, she was considered “ La Madre de los desamparados”. She managed to do this without compromising her moral and Godly principals.
At the age of 30 she found her true calling. Her whole life, she felt a strong connection with the homeless community and provided them with food and shelter using her own resources. Her other passion was visiting the sick and praying for them at the hospital. The accomplishments were many,to name only a few. She wore her metals with honor and was recognized by the community and her attending church.
