Daniil "Danny" Karabassis' Obituary
Daniil "Danny" Karabassis of Deltona passed away on January 23, 2024. He was born on February 9, 1960 in Evdilos, Ikaria, Greece. He was 63.
Danny was predeceased by his parents Konstandinos and Evangelia, to whom he was deeply devoted. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, the love of his life, Maria; their three children, Konstantine, Frank and Grace; his son-in-law Andrew; two grandchildren Oliver and Penelope; his four sisters Lemonia, Konstantina, Chrissoula, and Evangelia; countless nieces, nephews, and cousins; his brother-in-law Frank Vardaros (Jenisa) and a multitude of friends whom he loved very deeply.
Danny was the beloved husband of Maria and a true family man who dedicated himself to the success and happiness of his wife and kids throughout his life. His three children were his pride, and his two grandchildren were his joy. He would go to any lengths for his family.
As a young man, Danny traveled the world in the merchant marines and visited countries on almost every continent. During his married years, he founded two successful businesses. Danny was well-known for being a great employer with a big heart who reveled in the successes of his employees, to whom he became a friend and father figure.
Danny was a poet, a reader, an accomplished gardener who loved to cook, and an avid gamer with a deep curiosity for science and physics who dreamed of space travel. Though he never made it to space, Danny’s sense of adventure led him on multiple gold prospecting expeditions to Georgia, California, Oregon, Washington state, and Alaska. But as much as he loved the challenge of his expeditions, most of all Danny loved spending time fishing or camping with his family and friends.
Despite living most of his life in the United States, Danny remained deeply proud and connected to his Greek heritage. He was particularly proud of the island Ikaria, where he held many lasting friendships that so enriched his life.
In Greece, they have a word for people like Danny: philotimo. He had an attitude toward people that showed empathy, compassion, and generosity without expecting anything in return. He took pride in doing what was right and honorable while being humble at the same time. Danny’s philotimo was at the heart of his love, and why he was so loved by so many.
We love you, and we will miss you. May your memory remain eternal.
